Ukrainian Half Marathon Race Walking Championships – Uzhorod (UKR)

 

Today, March 7, Uzhhorod hosted the Ukrainian Team Athletics Championship in Race Walking among adults, youth, juniors and young men. Based on the results of this tournament, the Ukrainian national team will be formed to participate in the World Team Race Walking Championship, which will be hosted by Brasilia (Brazil) on April 12. Uzhhorod is a Ukrainian city located in the far west of the country, near the border with Slovakia. The program included the Half Marathon as the main events, with 17 athletes lining up at the start (10 men and 7 women), and the Marathon, unfortunately  without participants!

In the men’s Half Marathon, the victory went to Mykola Rushchak, from Sumska, with a time of 1:26:23. Rushchak had had to withdraw from the national short track championships in Kyiv a week earlier due to illness. His main opponents were his regional colleagues, Ihor Hlavan in 1:26:36 (Season Best) and Serhii Svitlychnyi in 1:26:43 (Personal Best). The national under-23 title was won by Eduard Muravskyi (6th overall) from Volinska, with a time of 1:30:41.

In the women’s race over the same distance, without the presence of the accredited Lyudmila Olyanovska, Hanna Shevchuk, from Ivano-Frankivsk, drew attention to herself, becoming national champion with a time of 1:36:31.  Second place, only 8 seconds behind the winner, to Mariia Sakharuk (Filiuk), from Volinska, with the mark of 1:36:39. Olena Sobchuk (Mizerniuk) completed the podium in 1:40:30. Fourth place and U23 champion to Valeriya Sholomitska who crossed the finish line in 1:40:59.
