Stoccolma si disputò una sola prova nella marcia: la 10.000 in pista.
Fin da allora la marcia era sempre abbastanza contestata per le questioni relative allo stile, retaggio che ci portiamo avanti fino ai nostri giorni.

Gli iscritti furono 23, provenienti da 11 paesi.
Curiosa la composizione delle batterie, con Goulding, Webb, Rasmussen e Altimani tutti nella prima batteria, con la vittoria del canadese in 47:14.5 e tutti gli altri tre sotto i 49 minuti.
L’unico altro uomo sotto i 50 minuti fu William YATES (GBR), che vinse l’altra batteria in 49:43.6.
Nella finale Webb partì subito attaccato a Goulding, ma nella parte finale della gara, a quattro giri dalla fine, dovette lasciare via libera al canadese.
Dei 10 componendi la finale solamente quattro terminarono la gara; tre infatti abbandonarono con un ritiro e altri tre furono gli squalificati.
La medaglia di bronzo di Francesco Altimani fu la prima medaglia italiana nella marcia nella storia delle Olimpiadi.
Altimani, appena diciannovenne, tipografo dipendente della Gazzetta dello Sport era nato vicino ai Bastioni di Porta Volta in Viale Monte Grappa a Milano il 8 dicembre 1893.
Non lontano vi era anche l'Arena che Luigi Canonica aveva eretto per Napoleone Bonaparte, dove Altimani, terminato il lavoro, andava ad allenarsi.
Nella gara di Stoccolma partì regolare recuperando posizioni anche in seguito al ritiro del britannico Yates ed alla squalifica del sudafricano Norman.
Quando Goulding staccò definitivamente Webb, Altimani, senza grossi patemi d’animo, occupò la terza posizione che mantenne fino al termine

In Stockholm has played in only one race walking event: 10,000 on track.

Entries 23 athletes from 11 Countries.
Funny the composition of the heats with Goulding, Webb, Rasmussen and Altimani all in the first heat, won by the Canadian in 47:14.5 and all the other three under 49 minutes.
The only other man under 50 minutes was William Yates (GBR), who won the other battery in 49:43.6.
In the final, Webb start immediately attached to Goulding, but at the end of the race, four laps to go, the Canadian increase the pace and go ahead.
Of the 10 athletes starting in the final only four finished the race, three DNF and three others were DQ.
The bronze medal of Francesco Altimani was the first medal in the Italian race walking in Olympic history.
Altimani, only nineteen old, a printer employed by Gazzetta dello Sport was born near the bastions of Porta Volta on Viale Monte Grappa in Milan December 8, 1893.
Not far away there was also the Arena erected by Luigi Canonica for Napoleon Bonaparte, where Altimani, after work, went to training.
In the race of Stockholm he start at his own pace recovering positions even after the withdrawal of the British Yates and the disqualification of the South African Norman.
When Goulding finally won on Webb, Altimani, with no major worries of mind, occupied the third position and held until the end
