La prima volta degli uomini e donne assieme nella 50km in un Campionato Europeo ha un unico grande avversario: il caldo.
Più che la distanza da percorrere a fare paura sono le alte temperature: le centraline di rilevamento parlano di 20,5° allo start per arrivare al termine della gara oltre i 30°.
Alla partenza si presentano in 55 atleti (36 uomini e 19 donne) in rappresentanza di 18 Paesi (la Romania è presente solamente nella gara maschile, la Serbia è presente solamente nella gara femminile).
50km uomini - cronaca
L'ultima volta di un Campionato Europeo sulla 50km (Zurigo 2014) fu riscritta la storia della lunga distanza in Europa e nel Mondo con quel 3:32:33 ottenuto da Yohann Diniz (FRA) nel giorno di Ferragosto. Oggi Diniz non è presente a difendere il suo terzo oro consecutivo.
Vale la pena ricordare un attimo le sue vittorie che hanno un sapore di un crescendo Rossiniano:

- Barcelona (ESP) 2010: 3:40:37
- Zurich (SUI) 2014: 3:32:33.
Perseus Karlstrom (SWE) non è allo start, ed ha optato per le 20km.

Allunga il passo poco prima dei 20km Matej Toth (SVK) che passa in testa in 1:31:52.

Ai 36km Zakalnytskyy guida in 2:43:51 davanti a Haukenes (2:44:29), che ha appena superato Toth (2:44:23) e Dziubin (2:44:36). Toth sembra stia soffrendo molto.
Ai 38km Zakalnytskyy guida in 2:52:43 davanti a Haukenes (2:53:16), che a suo carico una red card. Toth è ad 1" da Haukenes e Dziubin a 11" da Toth. In quinta posizione Carl Dohmann (GER) in 2:54:21.
Il passaggio ai 40km vede in testa Maryan Zakalnytskyy (3:01:38), davanti a Dzimitry Dziubin (3:02:10) e a Haward Haukenes (3:02:11). Perde ancora terreno Matej Toth.

Ai 44km Maryan Zakalnytskyy è sempre in testa in 3:19:39, seguito da Dzimitry Dziubin e Haward Haukenes (3:20:19). Quarto è Matej Toth (3:20:40). Carl Dohmann (GER) in 3:21:35 è quinto.
A due giri dal termine Maryan Zakalnytskyy è sempre in testa in 3:28:37, seguito da Dzimitry Dziubin (3:29:30) e Haward Haukenes (3:29:31). Quarto è Matej Toth (3:29:48) seguito da Carl Dohmann (GER) in 3:30:56.
Grande reazione di Matej Toth che raggiunge alla campana Dzimitry Dziubin (3:38:38) e lo supera poco dopo. La grinta del campione si vede anche nella crisi.

Maryan Zakalnytskyy (UKR) non può essere di certo considerato una sorpresa, come lo era stato nel maggio scorso a Taicang.
Una prestazione lineare la sua. L'atleta non ha fatto altro che ripetere la strategia di gara messa in mostra positivamente a Taicang.
Una prima parte di gara (abbiamo stimato il tempo ai 25km in 1:55:21 interpolando quello ai 24km - 1:50:53 con quello ai 26km - 1:59:49) più lenta della seconda parte (1:51:11) lo portano al risultato odierno di 3:46:32.
A Taicang aveva diviso le due metà gara in 1:54:13 (25km) per poi concludere la seconda parte in 1:50:26.
La sua una strategia che ancora una volta si è rivelata vincente.

Le stesse Nazioni della prova femminile sono quelle totalmente rappresentate (anzi la Spagna schiera quattro atleti in quanto è presente Miguel Angel Lopez in qualità di campione uscente).
La presenza di Vasily Mizinov (ANA) rimescola le carte per le previsioni delle medaglie.

Poco prima dell'ultimo giro Alvaro Martin (ESP) forza l'andatura e passa alla campana (1:16:47) con un vantaggio su Garcia e Mizinov di 9" (1:16:56), mentre l'italiano è quarto in 1:17:04.
Massimo Stano resiste distanziato di altri 8".
Nell'ultimo giro cambia molto poco.
Alvaro Martin (ESP) allunga ancora e va a vincere in tranquillità con il tempo di 1:20:42 (season best).
Diego Garcia (ESP) stacca di qualche metro Vasily Mizinov (ANA) e guadagna l'argento in 1:20:48.
Il bronzo va a Mizinov (1:20:50) che lo deve difenere a denti stretti dal ritorno di Massimo Stano (ITA) quarto in 1:20:51 (personal best).
Quinto posto per Nils Brembach (GER) in 1:21.25 che precede Miguel Angel Lopez (ESP) in 1:21:27.

The first time the men and women together in the 50km in a European Championship has only one great opponent: the heat.
