23/07/2024   Yusuke Suzuki announces his retirement

Fujitsu Athletics announced through Yoimiuri newspaper on July 23 that Yusuke Suzuki, 36 years old (born 2 Jan. 1988), will retire from competitions at the end of this month.

Suzuki is the men's world record holder in the 20km race walk and the winner of the 50km of the 2019 World Championships in the memorable night edition in Doha.

Nomi was the circuit where Suzuki expressed himself at his highest levels.

In 2010, still U23, he won his first Asian Race Walking Championships with a time of 1:20:06.

He returned to victory in the 2013 season with his second victory in 1:18:34 while in 2014 he was only second in 1:21:01.

The World Record was obtained in the 2015 edition with a time of 1:16:36.

Suzuki competed in the 20 km walk at the 2012 London Olympics. Unfortunately, his participation was not a lucky one: he had to settle for 35th place in 1:23:53.

At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where he competed in the 50-kilometer event, he won the first gold medal for a Japanese walker in a major international competition.

However, she later suffered from overtraining syndrome and withdrew from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

He will be a member of the Niigata Albirex Running Club and coach at Niigata University of Food and Agriculture. He commented, "I hope to show the next generation of athletes how I can return the much support I received when I was an athlete."
