16/08/2022   Munich (GER): Miguel Angel Lopez wins 35km of the European Championships 2022






 

 

The second day of competition welcomes the walkers to Monaco on the occasion of the European Championships with the two finals of the 35km walk.
The temperature is ideal around 18° Celsius, with a humidity of around 70%.
The start is unique and is given at 8:30 am and in the two and a half hours more or less of the race there is an increase in temperature that will be greater thasn 23° Celsius, while the humidity rate should be around 60%

Twenty-six athletes show up at the start (8:32) as Teodorico Caporaso doesn't start at the last moment.

Among them are Perseus Karkstrom (SWE), Miguel Angel Lopez (ESP), Marc Tur (ESP), Carl Dohmann (GER), Vit Hlavac (CZE), Artur Brzozowski (POL), Artur Mastianica (LTU), Miroslav Uradnik ( SVK), Alexandros Papamichail (GRE), Aleksi Oyaka (FIN) and Brendan Boyce (IRL) all veterans, with mixed success, from the 35km of the Eugene World Championships less than a month ago.

We will see how this will have affected physically.

 

- 8:53:05 - 5km:

 
The leading group is quite compact with more than 15 athletes (23:05).
Miguel Angel Lopez drives it, followed by Matteo Giupponi (ITA), Manuel Bermudez (ESP).
 
 

 
 
 
- 9:15:31 - 10km:
 
Immediately after the 5km Lopez forces the pace and takes the lead; Karlstrom follows him a short distance away.
Lopez's passage is 43:31 (5km seconds in 20:26).
Karlstrom passes in 43:48. Behind him Hilbert, Antonelli, Bermudez, Brzozowski and Giupponi (44:36)
 
- 9:36:02 - 15km:
 
The leader is Lopez is 1:04:02 (third 5km in 20:21).
Karlstrom passes in 1: 04.52 to 50".
Behind him Hilbert, Antonelli, Bermudez, Brzozowski, Giupponi, Tur and Aurelien Quinon (FRA) in 1:06:08.
Antonelli, Quinon and Tur are however burdened by 2 red cards, while immediately after Brzozowski receives the third and will be stopped in the penalty area.
 
- 9:56:02 - 20km:
 
The leader is Lopez in 1:24:33 (quarters 5km in 20:31).
Karlstrom passes in 1:26:02 to 1:32 and appears to be in crisis.
Behind him Giupponi, Bermudez, Quinon (FRA) in 1:06:08.
Antonelli, Quinon and Tur are however burdened by 2 red cards, while immediately after Brzozowski receives the third and will be stopped in the penalty area. 
 
- 10:17:05 - 25km:
 
The leader is always Lopez in 1:45:05 (fifth 5km in 20:32).
In second position there is now Christopher Linke (1:47:16) Behind him Bermudez (1:47:22) followed by Giupponi (1:47:29), Hilbert (1:49:01) and behind him Karlstrom (1:49:10)
Antonelli, Tur and Quinon were disqualified.
 
- 10:37:33 - 30km:
 
The leader is always Lopez in 2:05:33 (sixth 5km in 20:28).
In second place is always Christopher Linke (2:07:55)
Behind him Giupponi (2:08:41) reached and passed Bermudez (2:09:07) followed by Hilbert (1:49:01) and behind him Uradnik (2:11:39)
Karlstrom has abandoned the race.
 
- 10:58:49 - 35km:
 
In the last 5km nothing changes in the first six positions.
We witness the spectacular Miguel Angel Lopez catwalk both from a technical and a chronometric point of view. Although the Spaniard is enjoying the victory on the course going to embrace the coach José Antonio Carrillo with one lap from the end, his last 5km are covered in 21:26.
