27/02/2022   Nyiregyhaza (HUN): Victories of Barbara Olah and Maté Helebrandt at the Hungarian Indoor National Championships

The Hungarian Indoor National Championships was held this year in the new indoor stadium, in Nyíregyháza (250km from Budapest).

This is the second indoor venue in the whole country (until now, only one existed in Hungary which is located in Budapest). This track has a different surface as the other one (the athletes were get used to the old venue surface at Syma stadium in Budapest).

Almost all of international level walkers presented at the start line.

It was a battle from the very first meters between Viktoria Madarasz (HUN) and Barbara Kovacs-Olah (HUN).

Viktória Madarász (3-times Olympian) showed an impressive 12:44 time (she is preparing for 35km and has already achieved the entry standard for Oregon), finishing by more than 10 seconds before Barbara Kovacs-Oláh (2-times Olympian, maiden name Barbara Kovács, got married last year).

But very strict judging, Viktória received her third red card after crossing the finish line, so she got 30sec. penalty time.

Finally the gold medal went to Barbara Kovács-Olah who obtained a new personal best (12:55.04).

For her this performance represents her new personal best (previous of 13:01.39 obtained in Budapest on 21.2.2021)
Second place then to Viktoria Madarasz in 13:14.29
Third place to Rita Recsei HUN) in 13:23.97  who is also preparing for the longer distance this year.

Very interesting is the result obtained by Alexandra Kovacs born on 27.1.2006 and therefore just sixteen who, with a mark of 13:34.74, achieved the new national U18 record for Hungary (previous was held by Berta Kriván, 2008) and finished 4th at the senior race
We dedicate the cover image to her.
