Last weekend was busy in Switzerland's race walking calendar.
The Swiss masters race walking championship was hold in the beautiful Monthy which was also an open race for foreign athletes.
The head organiser was this time the Tokyo chief judge, Frederic Bianchi who made a great job in home soil. The walkers came from the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary and France.
The event began on Saturday with a 5000m and 10.000m track walk.
Most of the athletes chose the shorter distance. In the field represented Marie Polli the elite walker from Switzerland. The Olympian is just on her comeback after having two babies. The temperature was 23 Celsius at the start, typical "before storm" weather.
The 5000m was an easy win for the U20 French walker Peter Florian (22:11), the women's gold went to Anett Torma (HUN) with a solid time (26:10). Marie Polli (SUI) finished on the second place (29:40).
The 10.000m winner was the veteran Smola Joseph (CZE) in 57:16.
The second day was a very special event: 8km uphill walk. This was also part of the Swiss masters championships. The start was at 425m, the finish line was over 1180m (almost 800m altitude). This mountain required strong uphill skills. There was heavy rain during the competition which caused more difficulties. The first place went again to Anett Torma and the men's winner was Roby Ponzio.
