01/03/2021   Santee (USA): Nick Christie and Robyn Stevens win the USA 50km and 35km Championships






 

 

 

On Sunday, February 28, the USATF National Championships of 50km men and 35km women took place in Santee, California (USA).
 
 
50km men
 
Nine athletes at the start including two athletes (Jhon Castaneda, USA and David Velasquez, ECU) who competed in the 50km open.
 
In the USATF Championship:
 
Victory to Nick Christie (USA) in 4:10:53 not very far from his personal best (4:09:32) always established in Santee on the same course on 20.1.2018.
These are his split times:
- at 10km (8 laps of 1.250m): 49:50 (he is in third position behind Antony Joseph Gruttadauro, 49:42 and Andreas Gustafsson, 49:43)
- at 20km (16 laps of 1.250m): 1:38:27 (48:37), which sees him in second position behind Antony Joseph Gruttadauro, 1:37:59 (48:17)
- at 30km (24 laps of 1.250m): 2:27:29 (49:02). Christie who had reached Gruttadauro on lap 20 has now leading the race by 15 seconds
- at 40km (32 laps of 1.250m): 3:17:12 (49:43). Gruttadauro is now far behind 3:27
- last 10km: 53:41
 
Second place to Antony Joseph Gruttadauro (USA) in 4:19:18
Third place went to Joel Pfahler (USA) in 4:47:42
 
In the open race these are the results:
 
Victory to Jhon Castaneda (USA) in 4:09:11 and first overall with these split times
- at 10km (8 laps of 1.250m): 48:08
- at 20km (16 laps of 1.250m): 1:36:01 (47:54)
- at 30km (24 laps of 1.250m): 2:24:02 (48:01)
- at 40km (32 laps of 1.250m): 3:14:06 (50:04)
- last 10km: 55:05
Second place went to David Velasquez (ECU) in 4:25:16 who stayed with Jhon Castaneda up to 30km.
 
 
35km women
 
Eight athletes at the start including Mariela Sanchez (MEX), who competed in the 35km open.
 
In the USATF Championship:
 
Victory for Robyn Stevens (USA) in 3:01:08.
These are her split times:
- at 10km (8 laps of 1,250m): 49:51 (leads the race with a 47 second advantage over Katie Burnett, USA)
- at 20km (16 laps of 1,250m): 1:39:17 (49:26) (leads the race with a 4:23 second lead over Katie Burnett, USA who in turn has an 18 second lead on Stephanie Casey, USA)
- at 30km (24 laps of 1.250m): 2:32:54 (53:37). Now in second position Stephanie Casey trailing 4:27. Katie Burnett is in fourth position overtaken by Amberly Melendez (USA)
- last 5km: 28:14
 
Second place to Stephanie (USA) in 3:05:21
Third place to Amberly Melendez (USA) in 3:23:14
 
In the open race: Mariela Sanchez (MEX) finished in 3:27:38

Victory to Celina Lepe (USA) in 1:42:03
Second place to Janelle Branch (USA) in 1:51:23

Emmanuel Corvera (USA) did not finish the race as he stopped at 14km (1:07:48)
