A great teacher of world athletic walking has left us: Luis Antonio Chocho San Martin
World athletics is in mourning. At the age of 64, he died victim of Covid 19 Luis Antonio Chocho San Martin.
He was born on February 15, 1957 in Santa Isabel a western canton of the province of Azuay, Ecuador. He was one of the hungryest coaches who gave the universal race walk, worthy of being located in the Pantheon of the great together with the unforgettable Jerzy Hausleber.
I met him in November 1984 in Bucaramanga when the 1st Pan-American Cup of Athletic March took place in that Colombian city. I participated as a referee and previously as the organizer of an athletic walking seminar and also of another for journalists.
There he competed in the 20 km where he finished in 24th position and was sixth with the Ecuadorian team.
He was the great responsible for the great evolution of the Ecuadorian walk that through his influence has grown exponentially over time. Aided by the management quality of Jacobo Bucaram Ortiz and later of Fausto Mendoza Cajas he was able to use all his talents in the discovery and subsequent development of the potential of hundreds of Ecuadorian athletes.
Although his greatest exponent was Jefferson Leonardo Pérez Quesada, Olympic champion and multi-world champion and probably the most technical walker in history (which he discovered in 1988) Luis Chocho was able to leave an important legacy of great international figures .
With "Lucho" I was lucky enough to share numerous days and be the witness of great deeds of his most advantaged students such as the Pan American champions Andrés Chocho (his son) in Toronto 2015 and Claudio Villanueva in Lima 2019, the winner of the 2005 Pan American Cup, but also of Rolando Saquipay and other athletes such as Miriam Ramón, Paola Pérez, Johana Ordóñez, Mauricio Arteaga, Daniel Pintado, Joel Villavicencio, Karla Jaramillo to name but a few without forgetting Byron Piedra the important middle distance runner.
I had a long friendship with Luis which resulted in a fraternal hug every time we were on a sports stage somewhere in the world. Olympic and world events come to my mind, but also those unforgettable crusades of the International Walking Weeks in those years of my visit to Mexico.
In 1998 he was in my city to do a walking course, it was for December that we took the opportunity to invite him to our maximum party the “Lobo de Mar al deporte y la cultura” where he accompanied me when he received the qualification of journalist. The next day with my wife Marta we take him for a tour of Mar del Plata and we also adduce to nearby Miramar. He was also at my house sharing a meal. Somewhere there will be those photos of moments of happiness.
We have seen each other many times in his Cuenca, where he arrived whern he was eleven. There he transformed a bastion, which his city of him always recognized as “the circuit”, into a place where he could train away from the danger of the road. There where we have shared many times a walk, a meal, a cup of that Zhumir who at one time sponsored his teams.
A city where he has created a sports club that bears his name and a walking school that is an example for the world.
Jefferson Pérez, with whom at one point he was distanced, expressed knowledge of his death "we will have infinite gratitude, an infinite memory", and this is ultimately what will remain of his legacy and his contribution so that hundreds of young people had in sport their means of containment in life.
A little while ago in 2019 the South American Confederation of Athletics had conferred the decoration of merit as Master of Sport in recognition of almost half a century of trajectory.
Luis Antonio Chocho San Martín had a degree in physical culture and a citizen of the world, the one who mourns him today in the face of his irreparable loss. Farewell friend of sport, he rests in peace with all those who have preceded us and shared the best years of our life.

El Adiós a un gran maestro de la marcha atlética mundial: Luis Antonio Chocho San Martín.
El atletismo mundial está de duelo. A los 64 años falleció víctima del Covid 19 Luis Antonio Chocho San Martín. Había nacido el 15 de febrero de 1957 en Santa Isabel un cantón occidental de la provincia de Azuay, Ecuador. Fue uno de los entrenadores más afamados que dio la marcha universal, digno de ser ubicado en el panteón de los grandes junto al inolvidable Jerzy Hausleber.
Lo conocí en noviembre de 1984 en Bucaramanga cuando en esa ciudad colombiana se realizó la I Copa Panamericana de Marcha Atlética y concurrí como árbitro y previamente dicte un seminario de marcha atlética y otro para periodistas. Allí él compitió en los 20 Km donde arribó en la 24º ubicación y fue sexto con el equipo de Ecuador.
Fue el gran responsable de la grandiosa evolución de la marcha ecuatoriana que mediante su influjo creció de una manera exponencial con el tiempo. Ayudado por la calidad dirigencial primero de Jacobo Bucaram Ortiz y posteriormente del recordado Fausto Mendoza Cajas pudo desplegar todo su talento en el descubrimiento y posterior desarrollo del potencial de cientos de deportistas ecuatorianos.
Si bien su mayor exponente fue Jefferson Leonardo Pérez Quesada, múltiple campeón olímpico y mundial y el marchista más técnico de la historia –a quién descubrió en 1988- supo dejar además un importante legado de grandes figuras internacionales.
Con “Lucho” tuve la suerte de compartir numerosas jornadas y ser el testigo de grandes gestas de sus alumnos más aventajados como los campeones panamericanos Andrés Chocho (su hijo) en Toronto 2015 y Claudio Villanueva en Lima 2019, el ganador de la copa panamericana 2005 Rolando Saquipay y de otras figuras como Miriam Ramón, Paola Pérez, Johana Ordóñez, Mauricio Arteaga, Daniel Pimtado, Joel Villavicencio, Karla Jaramillo para citar sólo algunos sin olvidar a Byron Piedra el destacado mediofondista.
Tuve una larga amistad con Luis que se traducía en un abrazo fraterno cada vez que nos encontrábamos en un escenario deportivo en algún lugar del mundo. Me vienen a la memoria citas olímpicas y mundiales, pero también aquellas inolvidables cruzadas de las Semanas internacionales de la caminata en aquellos añorados años de las visitas a México.
En 1998 estuvo en mi ciudad para dar un curso de marcha, fue para diciembre en que aprovechamos a invitarlo a nuestra fiesta máxima el "Lobo de Mar al deporte y la cultura" donde me acompañó al recibir la distinción como periodista.. Al día siguiente con mi esposa Marta lo llevamos a recorrer Mar del Plata y nos allegamos también hasta la vecina Miramar. También estuvo en mi casa compartiendo una comida. Por algún lugar estarán aquellas fotos de momentos de felicidad.
Nos vimos muchas veces en su Cuenca, terruño por adopción al que había llegado a los once años. Allá formó un bastión que su ciudad reconoció siempre con aquel circuito en una plaza donde poder entrenar alejados del peligro de las rutas. Allí donde compartimos muchas veces un paseo, una comida, una copa de aquel Zhumir que en un tiempo patrocinó sus equipos. Una ciudad donde creó un club deportivo que lleva su nombre y una escuela de marcha que es un ejemplo para el mundo.
Jefferson Pérez, con el que en algún momento estuvo distanciado, expresó hace minutos “le tendremos infinita gratitud, infinito recuerdo”, y ello es en definitiva lo que quedará de su legado y contribución a que cientos de jóvenes tuvieran en el deporte su medio de contención en la vida.
Hace muy poco en el 2019 la Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo le había otorgado la condecoración al mérito como Maestro del Deporte en reconocimiento a casi medio siglo de trayectoria.
Luis Antonio Chocho San Martín era licenciado en cultura física y ciudadano del mundo, ese que hoy lo llora ante su irreparable pérdida. Adiós amigo del deporte, descansa en paz junto a todos aquellos que nos precedieron y compartieron los mejores años de nuestras vidas.
