During the second strong lockdown due to Covid in Attika, the Ministry of Culture and Sport gave permission to the Greek Athletics Federation (SEGAS) to organize the 35th indoor championship at Pireas, Stadium Peace & Friendship, under a very strong health protocol and only a few numbers of participating athletes in order to have safe competitions.
The 3000m and 5000m indoor walking distance competitions took place on Friday 12 February, without all the athletes from other parts of Greece.
5,000m indoor walk men
In the 5000m indoor men there were only 5 participants.
As in recent years the defending champion Alexandros Papamichail (GRE) was once again the winner.
Alexandros Papamichail after a successful participation in the 50km a few weeks ago at the Italian national 50km championship in Ostia, is back in Greece, realizing the indoor distance of 19:12.08, 50000m, just seconds from his national record 19:08.74 (2016).
Alexandros Papamichail is in his preparation period, for his third participation in the Olympic Games this time on the 50km, and by this time he is number 2 in the world seasonal ranking on the 5.000m indoor walk
Second place to Zacharia Tsamoudaki (GRE) in 19:58.73.
Third place to last year's winner Ioannis Vaitsi (GRE) who finished the race in 20:14.41
3.000m indoor walk women
In the 3000m indoor women the participants were only 3.
Victory to Antigoni Drispioti (GRE) who is preparing for his second Olympics in 12:21:43 a new national record (previous of 12: 27.18 also set in Pireus, GRE on 9.2.2020).
This performance at the moment is the best seasonal world time on the 3000m indoor
Second place to Christina Papadopoulou (GRE), who lives most of the year in Australia, in 12: 30.25 new personal best (the athlete shattered her previous record of 15: 36.04, set in Pireaus, GRE on 9.2. 2019) ..
Third place to Kiriaki Filtisakou (GRE), the youngest of the team, in 12: 38.82 also for her new personal best. (Previous of 13: 24.28 established in Pireaus, GRE on 9.2.2019).
