Over 80,000 tons of electronic waste have been collected (cell phones and some devices such as cameras, among others).
The components of many of these devices have been recycled to produce the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be delivered to the Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
It is estimated that over 5,000 medals will be awarded.

More than 6,000,000 mobile phones have been used for this purpose and the collection of the material began in April 2017 and ended in March 2019.
The designers chosen is Junichi Kawanishi who won the Tokyo 2020 medal competition.
