26/01/2020   Grosseto (ITA) - Great mark of Eleonora Giorgi (35km: 2:43:43)

Grosseto today hosted the seasonal winter debut of the road walk in Italy, what in the past was called the Winter Road Walk Trophy and which today is the first round of the Road Walk Clubs Championship.

If we consider the parterre of the names of the starters the two most interesting races are certainly those on the 35km which, however, unfortunately will not be part of the Olympic program of Sapporo, but will serve as an indication for the selections for the World Race Walking Team Championship that will take place in Minsk ( BLR) on 3.5.2020.

The 35km, however, takes on a particular role as it could and should be the longest distance of the march in the near future.

35km road walk women

Let's start with the race in which there is the athlete of greatest interest: Eleonora Anna Giorgi (ITA), who is experiencing a period of great interest after last season following her move to 50km and the technical suggestions she has been able to understand, acknowledge and put into practice.

Considering the women's race, Eleonora Anna Giorgi, as expected, has remained in the lead since the beginning of the same.
These are her split times every 5km:
- 5km: 23:29
- 10km: 46:52 (23:23)
At this point of the race the athlete has to deal with a red card (bent knee).
- 15km: 1:10:40 (23:58)
- 20km: 1:34:34 (23:54)
- 25km: 1:58:06 (23:32)
- 30km: 2:21:29 (23:23)

Eleonora Giorgi is capable of changing pace in the last 5km and closing the race with a final 5km of 22:14 which means a performance of 2:43:43 on the 35km.
An excellent start to the season: new personal best (previous of 2:45:21 established last year in Gioiosa Marea on 27.1.2019) and best world performance of the 2020 season.
Even more if you think that the performance was obtained on a course that can no longer be defined as ideal, being a little difficult to interpret with nine bent and consequent changes in pace.
Interesting is the analysis of the split times of today's race and that of 2019

Km 2019 2020 Difference

10km 47:50 46:52 - 0:58
20km 1:33:17 1:34:34 + 0:43
30km 2:22:20 2:21:29 - 1:09
35km 2:45:21 2:43:43 - 1:38

It is increasingly evident that in the race walk of the last seasons the difference is made in knowing how to best express the speed in the last kilometers of the race.

Second place to Nicole Colombi (ITA) in 2:54:12
Third place to Lidia Barcella (ITA) in 2:58:44

The race also takes on a particular physiognomy in this case.
Matteo Giupponi (ITA) goes straight to the head and remains alone to make the pace.
These are his split times up to 15km:
- 5km: 21:49
- 10km: 43:23 (21:34)
- 15km: 1:04:37 (21:14)
But at this point, unfortunately, there is the intervention of the jury that disqualifies him (remember that in Italy in senior matches there is no rule of the penalty zone which instead is in the U20 and U18. Two red cards are missing due to him of contact with the ground and one for unlocking the knee. His race ends just before 20km when his lead over the followers was over 2:15.

Federico Tontodonati remains at the lead of the race.
The race can almost be said to be over.

The lights of the day

We have already said all the good possible about Eleonora Anna Giorgi who compared to the result of 2019 has managed in a very interesting exploit.

Another result, in our opinion, of particular interest is that of Sara Buglisi capable of moving from 1:44:59 of Gioiosa Marea to 1:38:17 (an improvement of 6:42 to the second 20km of the career is a result from do not underestimate). At the moment the Italian juniore women is the U20 seasonal world leaders on this distance, but even considering the entire 2019 season this result would have been worth the 13th world position of 2019 for a U20 on this distance.

In men we like to report the performance of 2:34:55 with which Federico Tontodonati obtained the victory. Compared to the previous season in Gioiosa Marea this result is better than 1:19, but it is also better (-0:08) than the result that, at the time, allowed Massimo Stano to obtain the victory (2:35:03 ).

Finally a few nice words for the U20 Andrea Cosi who win the race on the long distance of the juniors with a mark of 1:28:25. So he destroied the personal best obtained in Gioiosa Marea on 27.1.2019 at 1:35:04. For him too an improvement of 6:19 in the second 20km of his career is a result not to be underestimated.
